Case Study - Community Park Renovation
Project Overview
This project involved the renovation of a poorly kept community garden into a showplace community park. The site was a lot adjacent to a former candy factory which had been converted into housing. Over its history, the lot had contained a small church on one corner as well as several other structures. Most recently it had been used as a community garden with a score of plots for local residents and school children to grow flowers and vegetables. Much of the soil on the lot was urban fill that contained levels of lead higher than state standards. The perimeter of the site was secured with a chain-link fence and chicken wire. The goal of the project was urban beautification that included removal of lead-impacted soil and development of a park to which all citizens could have access.
