Case Study - Initial Response Action
Project Overview
A release of gasoline to the environment occurred when a bulk gasoline semi tractor-trailer overturned in the median of I-93 in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Gasoline was released to the ground surface and to a small pool through which a brook flowed via culverts beneath the highway. EnviroSense was retained by the insurance company of the bulk carrier to conduct environmental investigations per New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) regulations. The investigations determined that the gasoline release had migrated a substantial distance from the accident site, impacts to soil and ground water exceeded the NHDES risk-based standards, and MTBE had impacted the drinking water supply well at a neighboring residential property.
EnviroSense Role
- Completing Initial Response Actions (IRA), which included excavating over 97 tons of gasoline-impacted soil in addition to the initial soil excavated during emergency response actions.
- Collecting soil excavation endpoint samples for laboratory analysis and assessment.
- Collecting surface water samples from the brook for laboratory analysis and assessment.
- Collecting drinking water supply well samples from residential properties to ensure conditions protective of human health have been maintained.
- Submittal of IRA and technical status reports to the NHDES.
