Case Study -
Insurance Support / Gasoline Tanker Spill
Project Overview
EnviroSense provided emergency response, site investigation, environmental and human risk characterization, and remediation services for a release from a 12,000-gallon tanker truck which rolled over while negotiating a turn, spilling approximately 11,000 gallons of gasoline onto the street and adjacent walkway in a major urban, downtown area, impacting multiple properties and businesses. The released gasoline flowed on the surface of, and in the storm drain system beneath, a major street, into a large river, and to nearby wetlands. Gasoline also entered catch basins and manholes associated with the storm drainage system, and several subsurface utilities.
Following emergency response actions, a soil vapor extraction system and an indoor venting system were constructed to minimize vapor intrusion into an occupied college building located directly above the release area. Initial response actions included an assessment of more than 50 properties in the release area; water flushing of the storm drainage system; and air monitoring of manholes, catch basins, and basements of nearby buildings.
EnviroSense Role
- Completed site investigations to assess potential impacts to soil, surface water, sediment, ground water, air, and structures in accordance with regulatory agency requirements.
- Coordinated all project activities involving several third party impacts, news media, municipal officials, utility companies, business owners, and multiple legal representatives.
- Developed and implemented timely responses to Imminent Hazard situations and threats to Public Safety.
- Developed data collection program for this large areal release.
- Evaluated data, identified exposure pathways and human and environmental receptors, and characterized risk associated with contaminated media.
- Provided and directed emergency remedial measures and assessed need for further cleanup of impacted media.
- Directed clean up contractors to control remediation costs.
- Obtained multiple city permits to conduct work in public rights-of-way.
- Coordinated dissemination of site information to a public repository and led project discussions with concerned citizen group representatives and municipal officials.
- Provided report documentation to state regulatory agencies to summarize site activities and findings of investigations.
