Case Study - Development of Uncontrolled Dumping Site
Project Overview
This site was allegedly the location of uncontrolled dumping of solid waste, construction debris, and possibly other wastes from the greater Boston area between the 1970's and 1980's. It is surrounded by residential properties and plans for its development included a residential community. The portion of the site to be developed was comprised of construction demolition debris and household waste. The primary environmental concern, and the focus of EnviroSense's involvement on this project, was to classify the nature and extent of contaminated media on the site and propose strategies for future use and remediation design as directed by the concerned citizens group. Through several site investigation methods, we identified contaminants in site media including asbestos, heavy metals, pesticides, construction debris, volatile organic compounds, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons that had not been identified by prior consultants. This project involved significant interfacing with municipal officials, including the Board of Health, presentations at public participation meetings, and technical oversight of the developer's consultant.
EnviroSense Role
- Held public involvement meetings.
- Prepared and implemented site assessment protocol.
- Met with City and community members to discuss the proposed site assessment program.
- Assisted in community outreach and education.
- Proposed restrictions for future site use based upon contaminants of concern and remedial alternatives.
- Oversaw environmental sampling to define contaminant source areas.
